GamStop is the UK’s national self-exclusion service for online gambling. If you sign up to GamStop, you’re blocked from logging in to any UKGC-licensed gambling site — which includes every PayPal-accepting casino operating under a UK licence. This page covers how GamStop interacts with PayPal specifically, what’s inside and outside the scheme, and the practical questions players ask.
The headline facts
- GamStop is free and administered by the UK charity that runs the scheme, under regulator mandate.
- Every UKGC-licensed gambling site must participate. There’s no UKGC-licensed casino that accepts PayPal and bypasses GamStop.
- You choose the duration: 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years. It cannot be lifted before the period ends.
- It blocks login, not deposits. Your existing PayPal balance isn’t touched; the casino just won’t let you open the account.
- It’s enforced by the operator. If a GamStop-registered user manages to deposit at a UK casino (via account left open by mistake, for example), the casino is required to refund the deposit and close the account.
What GamStop covers — and what it doesn’t
Covered
– Every UKGC-licensed online casino, bingo, lottery, and sportsbook that offers online play
– Mobile gambling apps from UKGC-licensed operators
– PayPal-accepting UK casinos — same as any other UK operator
– Any operator that targets UK customers and holds a UKGC licence (including international brands with a UK-licensed subsidiary)
Not covered
– Offshore casinos that don’t hold a UKGC licence — Curaçao, Anjouan, some Kahnawake operators, etc.
– Land-based casinos, betting shops, and bingo halls (covered by separate schemes)
– National Lottery products (separate self-exclusion via Allwyn)
– Arcade and adult gaming machines
– Casino-style social games (no real money) on Facebook, app stores, etc.
The offshore loophole
GamStop only binds UKGC-licensed operators. Offshore casinos — the ones PPCasinos does not recommend — are outside the scheme, which is one of the main reasons they’re outside our recommendation list. If you’re considering self-exclusion and want it to actually hold, also:
- Install blocking software (Gamban, BetBlocker — some are free)
- Use your bank’s gambling-transaction block (most UK banks now offer this in-app)
- Use browser content blockers focused on gambling domains
Belt and braces. The combination is hard to circumvent under stress.
How GamStop interacts with PayPal
PayPal itself is not part of GamStop. PayPal doesn’t enforce gambling self-exclusion — it processes payments to merchants who have authorised merchant agreements.
So the interaction is:
- You register with GamStop. Your name and DOB go into the GamStop database.
- You try to log in to a UKGC-licensed PayPal casino. The casino checks GamStop at login.
- Login blocked. You can’t deposit — even if you have a PayPal balance ready to use.
- Existing PayPal transactions history at that casino is untouched. GamStop doesn’t reverse past deposits.
PayPal won’t stop you from making a gambling deposit at an *offshore* casino that isn’t GamStop-participating. If you need a payment-level block, enable your bank’s gambling-transaction block — this stops card/bank deposits to gambling merchants regardless of the casino’s licensing.
How to register with GamStop
Five minutes, online, free.
- Go to gamstop.co.uk — the only official URL. Any other domain is not GamStop.
- Click Register.
- Provide your full name, date of birth, address, email, and phone number. Other aliases you’ve used at gambling sites too — this helps match existing accounts.
- Choose your exclusion period: 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years.
- Confirm.
Registration is processed within 24 hours. Your existing gambling accounts at UKGC operators will be closed; any withdrawable balance is refunded via the operator’s standard process.
Can I lift GamStop early?
No. Once registered, the exclusion holds for the full period you chose. This is deliberate — decreasing the limit is what the scheme is for. The inability to lift it on a bad night is the feature, not the bug.
When your period ends, the exclusion doesn’t auto-renew — you have to actively decide to return to gambling. If you want to extend, log in at GamStop and renew before expiry.
If you’re struggling
GamStop isn’t a treatment — it’s a barrier. For the underlying issue (gambling addiction, chasing losses, using gambling to cope with stress), please reach out to one of these services:

What’s the alternative to GamStop?
If your goal is firm control without full self-exclusion:
- Operator deposit limits — set daily/weekly/monthly caps inside your casino account
- Operator loss limits — different from deposit; accounts for withdrawals
- Short-term cooling-off — some UK operators offer 24-hour or 7-day cooling-off that’s lighter than GamStop
- Per-operator self-exclusion — blocks one casino without the full GamStop binding
- Bank gambling block — most UK banks now offer a 24/7 on/off switch for gambling transactions in their app
If the goal is “stop entirely for a while”, GamStop. If the goal is “tighter guardrails without full stop”, operator-side limits.
Frequently asked questions
Is GamStop compatible with PayPal? Yes — GamStop blocks casino logins, which prevents you from depositing via any method including PayPal. PayPal itself isn’t part of the scheme but is effectively blocked at UKGC casinos.
Can I still use PayPal for non-gambling purchases while on GamStop? Yes. GamStop doesn’t touch PayPal’s gambling or non-gambling activity — only casino logins.
If I’m on GamStop, will a PayPal casino refund my previous deposits? No. GamStop blocks new activity; past deposits are treated normally per the casino’s T&Cs.
What if I find a UKGC casino that lets me log in while I’m on GamStop? Report it to the UKGC — operators are legally required to honour GamStop. They can be fined for non-compliance. The casino must refund any deposits made after your GamStop registration.
Does GamStop apply to offshore PayPal casinos? No — GamStop only binds UKGC licensees. Offshore operators are outside the scheme. Use bank transaction blocks (Monzo, Starling, Barclays, HSBC and others offer this in-app) as a separate layer of protection.
Can I shorten my exclusion period if I change my mind? No. It holds for the full chosen period.
What happens to my gambling account balance when I GamStop? Withdrawable funds are returned to you via the operator’s standard withdrawal process, usually back to your PayPal (if that’s what you deposited with) or card.

Self-exclusion schemes outside the UK
If you live outside the UK and want the equivalent firm-stop, every major regulated market has its own national scheme. Each operates independently of GamStop — signing up to one doesn’t trigger any of the others.
- CRUKS (Netherlands) — mandatory for KSA-licensed operators. Six-month minimum.
- Spelpaus (Sweden) — run by Spelinspektionen. Six months, one year, or longer.
- ROFUS (Denmark) — administered by Spillemyndigheden. Choose 24 hours, three months, six months, or permanent.
- OASIS (Germany) — the GGL-administered cross-operator scheme. Mandatory for GGL-licensed sites.
- SRIJ (Portugal) — the SRIJ regulator’s central exclusion register.
- RUA (France) — ANJ’s national exclusion scheme.
- Adicciones (Spain) — the DGOJ-managed register, RGIAJ.
If you’re a UK resident travelling or living abroad temporarily and using local operators, GamStop won’t reach those operators — you’d register with the local scheme separately. Conversely, GamStop only blocks UKGC operators, not local-licensed sites in countries where you’re resident.
Bank-level gambling blocks — the second layer
Most UK challenger banks and an increasing number of high-street banks now offer a one-tap gambling-transaction block in their app. It blocks card and direct-debit payments to merchants categorised as gambling — including casinos that accept PayPal, since the underlying funding source is your bank or card.
- Monzo, Starling, Revolut — in-app toggle. Some require a 48-hour cooling-off period before lifting the block (good).
- Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC, NatWest — varies by app version; usually under “spending controls” or “card management”.
- American Express, Capital One — gambling-merchant block via support call rather than app.
This is especially useful for two scenarios:
- Offshore casinos GamStop can’t reach. The bank block stops payment to any gambling-categorised merchant regardless of licence.
- The friction layer before depositing. Even if you don’t fully self-exclude, having to spend 48 hours unblocking a bank’s gambling block before you can deposit again is enough to break impulse-deposit patterns.
Combine GamStop (UKGC operators), bank-level block (offshore + payment-side defence), and a software blocker like Gamban or BetBlocker (browser/app-level) for the strongest practical defence.
What GamStop actually does at the technical level
GamStop is a centralised national self-exclusion database administered by the UK Gambling Commission-approved body GAMSTOP (National Online Self Exclusion Scheme Ltd). When you register, your identity details (full name, date of birth, address, postcode, email) are stored and matched against the KYC data held by every UKGC-licensed operator. On every new account registration and every login at a UKGC operator, your identity is checked against the GamStop database in real time. A match blocks the account from being used — registration is rejected for new signups, and existing accounts are suspended and prevented from depositing.
What GamStop does NOT cover
GamStop only covers UKGC-licensed operators. It does not cover:
- Casinos licensed outside the UK (Malta MGA, Gibraltar, Curacao, Anjouan) that happen to accept UK players through a grey-area setup. Many “non-GamStop” casinos specifically market to GamStop-registered players — this is legal on their side but carries significantly reduced consumer protection.
- Lottery or betting shops (separate self-exclusion schemes cover those).
- Peer-to-peer gambling platforms.
- Social casinos and sweepstakes sites that operate under different legal frameworks.
If you are GamStop-registered and need help
Non-GamStop casinos targeting self-excluded UK players is a documented route to continued gambling harm. If you find yourself looking for “non-GamStop” casinos, that is itself a strong signal that the underlying pattern has not shifted and a conversation with one of the helplines listed on this page would be more useful than finding a workaround. BeGambleAware’s 24/7 line (0808 8020 133), GamCare (0808 8020 133 is shared) and Gordon Moody’s residential treatment programs are all genuinely confidential and free.
Reversing a GamStop registration
You cannot cancel or shorten a GamStop registration within its active period — that is by design. Once the chosen period expires (6 months, 1 year or 5 years), the registration auto-closes and you can reopen casino accounts. There is a 24-hour “cooling-off” window after the period ends during which you can extend the registration; after that window, reactivation of casino accounts is automatic. If you registered accidentally or your circumstances have genuinely changed, the GamStop team can review an early-unblock request, but approval is rare and requires demonstrable evidence of changed circumstances.
