Most casino comparison sites won’t tell you how their rankings are produced. We will. This page sets out exactly how PPCasinos scores online casinos, what each criterion is worth, and what it takes for a casino to end up on one of our recommended lists.
Every casino covered on the site is scored against the same 10 criteria, each weighted by how much it actually matters to a PayPal player. Scores add up to a 100-point total. The methodology is reviewed annually and signed off by the editor — see our about page for the team behind it.
The 10 criteria we score
Each criterion is scored from 0 to 100 by the assigned reviewer, then multiplied by its weight to produce a contribution to the overall total. The headings below show the weight and what we look for.
1. Licence and regulatory standing — weight 15%
We start with the licence. UKGC, MGA and ADM are the regulators we trust most for the markets we cover; Curaçao licences carry less weight and we say so on the page. We cross-check the operator against the regulator’s public register, review enforcement notices and complaints history, and check ownership for prior bans.
Scores well: current top-tier licence, no enforcement action in 24 months. Loses points: rebrands of sanctioned operators, vague licence details, unresolved complaints.
2. PayPal experience — weight 15%
This is the criterion that separates PPCasinos from generic review sites. We score the actual PayPal flow: how cleanly PayPal links to the account, whether the deposit succeeds first time, how verification is handled, and whether PayPal is treated as a first-class method or buried below cards.
Scores well: instant deposits, withdrawals under 24 hours, no surprise fees, PayPal bonus-eligible. Loses points: PayPal excluded from welcome bonuses, slow PayPal-to-bank settlement, manual review on every withdrawal.
3. Bonus quality and T&C transparency — weight 12%
We read the bonus T&Cs in full at the time of testing. We score wagering, max bet during wagering, time limits, game weighting and — most importantly — whether PayPal deposits qualify. A casino can have a generous headline offer and still score badly if PayPal users are excluded.
Scores well: wagering at or below 35x, max bet £5+, 30+ days to clear, PayPal eligible. Loses points: wagering above 50x, max bet under £2.50, PayPal excluded, T&Cs hidden behind multiple clicks.
4. Game library — weight 10%
We look at the provider mix (we want at least five tier-one studios), library size, live dealer coverage, and whether RTP is published per game. Mobile coverage matters too — a desktop-only library scores lower because most of our readers play on phones.
Scores well: 1,000+ slots from a balanced provider mix, live dealer from Evolution or Pragmatic Play Live, published RTPs. Loses points: reliance on one provider, missing RTP data, broken mobile games.
5. Withdrawal speed and limits — weight 12%
We time at least one withdrawal end-to-end, from request to funds in the PayPal balance. We also note minimum and maximum limits, weekly caps, and whether verification is required before the first withdrawal.
Scores well: pending under 12 hours, PayPal arrival under 24 hours total, minimum at £10 or below. Loses points: pending periods over 48 hours, weekly caps under £2,000, pre-deposit KYC blocking play.
6. Customer support — weight 8%
We test live chat, email and (where available) phone. We score response time, hours of cover, and whether the agent actually knows how PayPal works at their casino. A 30-second response from someone who tells you “we don’t support PayPal” when you’ve just deposited via PayPal is a bad score.
Scores well: 24/7 live chat, replies under 2 minutes, agents who can answer payment questions. Loses points: chat hidden behind login, slow email, scripted responses.
7. Mobile experience — weight 8%
We test the mobile site in Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS. We score load speed, navigation, ease of completing a deposit on mobile, and whether a dedicated app exists. An app isn’t required — a fast mobile site scores just as well.
Scores well: loads under 3 seconds, PayPal deposit in three taps, no horizontal scroll. Loses points: forced app download, broken landscape mode, registration that breaks on mobile.
8. Responsible gambling tools — weight 8%
We check what the casino offers and how easy it is to find. Deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion should all be available without contacting support. For UK-licensed casinos we verify GamStop integration directly.
Scores well: full toolset accessible in two clicks, GamStop active where required, limits applied instantly. Loses points: tools buried, “contact us to set a limit” flows, no cooling-off option.
9. Fees and payment terms — weight 6%
We check whether PayPal carries any deposit or withdrawal surcharge, the minimum and maximum amounts, and whether currency conversion applies for non-GBP accounts. Hidden fees are an instant deduction — they tend to surface only after you’ve already deposited.
Scores well: zero PayPal fees either direction, transparent FX, low minimum withdrawal. Loses points: percentage withdrawal fees, undisclosed FX margins, monthly free-withdrawal caps.
10. Reputation and player feedback — weight 6%
We balance our test against external signals: Trustpilot trends (we read the recent one-star reviews, not just the headline score), AskGamblers complaint resolution stats, and chatter on dedicated gambling forums. Our own long-term forum experience feeds in here too.
Scores well: stable Trustpilot trend, complaints resolved, no pattern of withdrawal disputes. Loses points: one-star spikes after T&C changes, unresolved complaints, reports of confiscated balances.
How we score
The 10 weighted criteria add up to a 100-point total. We use the bands below for the headline label on each review.
| Score band | Label | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | Top pick | Goes on our recommended list. Strong PayPal experience, top-tier licence, transparent bonuses. |
| 70–79 | Recommended | Solid casino with one or two areas you should know about — explained on the review. |
| 60–69 | Conditional | Listed but with caveats. Usually a known weakness like slow withdrawals or restrictive bonus T&Cs. |
| Below 60 | Not recommended | Either kept off the site entirely or marked as not recommended on the review page so you know we tested it. |
Scores aren’t published with every review by default — we lead with the verdict and the breakdown — but the underlying scores are available on request via our contact page.
How often we re-test
Casinos change. T&Cs get rewritten, new owners come in, payment processors get switched out. We work on a quarterly re-test cadence as standard, plus on-event re-tests when something material happens.
- Quarterly — every casino in our recommended lists is re-checked at least every 90 days. PayPal flow is re-tested, bonus T&Cs are re-read, licence status is re-verified.
- On rebrand — if an operator changes name, ownership or licensing entity, we re-test from scratch.
- On complaint spike — if Trustpilot or AskGamblers shows a pattern of new complaints, we bring the next re-test forward.
- On T&C change — if the casino changes its bonus terms, withdrawal limits or PayPal eligibility, we update the review within 14 days.
What we don’t accept
To keep the scoring honest we draw clear lines around what the team will and won’t do.
- We don’t accept paid placements on recommended lists. A casino cannot pay us to rank higher than its score warrants.
- We don’t accept undisclosed sponsorships. Any partnership content is labelled and kept off the comparison tables.
- We don’t accept gifted bonuses or VIP perks in exchange for coverage. Reviewers play on standard accounts.
- We don’t write reviews based only on the casino’s own marketing copy. Every published review involves a real test.
Conflict-of-interest disclosure
We make money through affiliate commissions when a reader signs up at a casino via our links. That model funds the testing and pays the team. It’s also a conflict of interest, so we disclose it openly.
The methodology above is what protects you from that conflict. Scores are set by the criteria, not by the commission rate. A higher-paying casino with a 65 score does not jump above a lower-paying casino with an 82 score. If we ever made that compromise, the site would lose the only thing that makes it useful.
The full editorial rules sit on our editorial policy page, and the disclosure that appears on every commercial page is on our advertiser disclosure page.

Our methodology in practice: a worked example
Reviews are not abstract. Every score we publish is backed by a specific series of tests our team ran on the operator in the last 90 days. For a typical casino review:
- We register an account using a real identity, complete KYC, and deposit $20–$100 via PayPal to measure cashier speed and confirmation timing.
- We play through the slot lobby (10+ spins on at least 3 titles) and the live-dealer lobby (at least one full blackjack shoe at $5–$25 stakes, one roulette spin cycle, one baccarat cycle) to measure latency, UI friction and dealer-interaction quality.
- We request a withdrawal of the remaining balance back to PayPal and time it from request to funds-received-in-wallet.
- We contact customer support on two channels (email and live chat) with a routine question to measure response time and answer quality.
- We check the operator’s responsible-gambling tool accessibility — how many clicks from the lobby to find deposit limits, and whether GamStop (or the equivalent regulator self-exclusion tool) is one-click reachable.
Why we never rely solely on operator-supplied information
Operator marketing pages are prepared by the operator’s own marketing team — they present the most favourable picture of bonus terms, game catalogue and support quality. Our review team maintains live accounts at the operators we cover, which means every claim we make (“same-day PayPal withdrawal”, “live chat responds in under 5 minutes”, “PayPal qualifies for the welcome bonus”) is tested in real time, not paraphrased from the operator’s own promotional copy. When operator-supplied information contradicts what we measure, we publish our measurement.
How review updates are scheduled
Operator cashier flows, bonus terms, game catalogues and support quality change over time. Every review in our directory is re-tested at minimum once per quarter (more often for high-traffic pages). A review that has not been updated in the last 90 days is flagged on-page as “due for re-test”. The most common change is bonus terms — operators adjust match rates, wagering requirements and PayPal-specific eligibility several times a year in response to market conditions.
Transparency about our commercial relationships
PPCasinos may earn a commission when a reader clicks through from our site to an operator and signs up. This is disclosed on every review page and in our advertiser disclosure. Commissions do not influence the score or placement of any operator in our directory — our scoring is based on the methodology above, independent of the commission structure. Operators that we rate poorly remain poorly rated in our directory regardless of commission terms; we have removed operators from our directory outright after failed re-tests, even when doing so reduced our commission income.
